North Carolina Center for Nonprofits Expands Capacity Building Work with Grant Award
The North Carolina Center for Nonprofits has been awarded a Triangle Capacity-Building Network grant from Triangle Community Foundation. The $50,000 grant award will support the Center’s Nonprofit Management Institute, a virtual learning cohort designed to help nonprofit leaders assess their organizations’ management practices and strengthen capacity, and an online resource library open to all nonprofits.
“The nonprofit sector is a critical segment within each of our communities at the state, county, and local levels, meeting needs and filling gaps that neither government nor for-profit sectors can fill,” says Jeanne Tedrow, president and CEO of the North Carolina Center for Nonprofits. “We’ve heard an expressed need for and from nonprofits to have a comprehensive management program that speaks to best practices and guidance on operations, especially now in the midst of this pandemic. And the Nonprofit Management Institute will do just that.”
The Nonprofit Management Institute has been developed in partnership with the Guilford Nonprofit Consortium from ongoing nonprofit management research, education, and the Center’s guide, Principles & Practices: Best Practices for North Carolina Nonprofits.
In weekly sessions from September 15-October 13, Dr. Pamela Palmer, nonprofit educator, practitioner, and consultant, will facilitate learning, discussion, and practical management strategies among nonprofit executives, managers, and board leaders around board governance, program design and evaluation, strategic planning, fundraising, financial management, and human resources.
In addition to graduating with a Nonprofit Management Institute certificate, participants can earn credit as part of the Duke University Nonprofit Management Program.
“Funders have increasingly recognized the opportunity to help nonprofit organizations strengthen from the inside out, and are collaborating like the Triangle Capacity-Building Network,” says Tanaya Suddreth Lynch from Triangle Community Foundation. “The Center’s capacity building programs, including the Nonprofit Management Institute, align with and support the goal we’re moving towards: building strong, sustainable nonprofits.”

About the Center: Founded in 1990, the North Carolina Center for Nonprofits is a private 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that serves as a statewide network for nonprofit board and staff members, an information center on effective organizational practices, and an advocate for the nonprofit sector as a whole. The Center offers services directly to all sizes and types of 501(c)(3) nonprofits and works closely with other local, state, and national groups that assist nonprofits.
About the Triangle Capacity Building Network: The Network is actively made up of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation, Fidelity Charitable Trustees’ Initiative, John Rex Endowment, Oak Foundation, The Mary Duke Biddle Foundation, and Triangle Community Foundation, with other regional funders and nonprofit consultants also participating. It is focused on disrupting the status quo, changing the narrative, and doing things differently in the nonprofit sector and the community it serves. Since its creation in 2014, they have commissioned research, engaged nonprofits in conversations about capacity building, and built a strategic direction with a desired outcome of creating strong nonprofits in the Triangle region of North Carolina.
